{"id":8736,"date":"2023-09-01T08:37:00","date_gmt":"2023-09-01T08:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/panzifoundation.org\/?p=8736"},"modified":"2024-11-14T08:43:44","modified_gmt":"2024-11-14T08:43:44","slug":"press-release-concerning-the-massacre-in-goma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/panzifoundation.org\/press-release-concerning-the-massacre-in-goma\/","title":{"rendered":"Press Release Concerning the Massacre in Goma"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>September 1, 2023, Bukavu &#8212; I am deeply outraged by the shocking images of the massacre suffered by demonstrators from the politico-religious movement &#8220;La Foi Naturelle Juda\u00efque Messianique vers les Nations&#8221; (FNJMN) in Goma on Wednesday, August 30, 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The death toll was very high: the Congolese government reported 43 dead and 56 wounded. Civil society organizations put the toll much higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I strongly condemn this barbaric act perpetrated by members of the Congolese army, whose primary mission is to protect our population and our territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FARDC&#8217;s use of force was disproportionate, unacceptable and reprehensible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This umpteenth blunder illustrates the urgent need for far-reaching reform of the security sector to professionalize the defense and security forces.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I extend my sincere condolences to the families of the victims and express my sympathy to them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I urge our government to :<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Declare national mourning;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure that the victims are identified;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take charge of the care of the injured and provide psychological support to the families of the victims and to the members of their politico-religious movement;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Organize official funerals and bury the victims with dignity;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Initiate an independent inquiry to shed full light on this tragic incident, and ensure that the perpetrators of these despicable acts are tried and sentenced in accordance with the law.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Denis Mukwege<br><em>Nobel Peace Prize Laureate<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>September 1, 2023, Bukavu &#8212; I am deeply outraged by the shocking images of the massacre suffered by demonstrators from the politico-religious movement &#8220;La Foi Naturelle Juda\u00efque Messianique vers les Nations&#8221; (FNJMN) in Goma on Wednesday, August 30, 2023.
